AI companion free trials: what to check before adding a card

Free preview, timed trial, freemium and read-only access are different things.

A “free trial” can mean a limited number of messages, a short period of premium access, or a free account that never expires but locks important capabilities. These offers can change quickly. Evaluate the conditions shown to your specific account before supplying a payment method.

Four types of free access

  • Free tier: continuing but limited use, sometimes with slower replies or fewer features.
  • Message preview: a finite introduction; after the quota, some products require payment to continue.
  • Timed premium trial: access for a fixed number of days; this may require card details and auto-renew.
  • Read-only account: old content may remain visible while messaging and calls are disabled.

Case study: why wording matters

Kindroid’s official October 2026 subscription documentation separates a limited flagship-model preview from a three-day premium trial. It also explains that the trial can automatically become a paid subscription and that expired access can become read-only. That is a reminder not to interpret “try free” as “free forever.”

Before you tap “Start trial”

  1. Find the exact renewal date and timezone.
  2. Check which platform manages billing: website, Apple or Google.
  3. Find the cancellation control and save a screenshot for your own records.
  4. Check whether paid voice or media features consume separate credits.
  5. Try the feature you actually care about, such as recalling a story detail or placing a real-time call.

After cancelling

Cancellation might preserve paid access through the billing period, stop future renewals, or change the account to read-only. It may not delete messages or cancel separately billed add-ons. Confirm the outcome in the same billing channel where you subscribed.
