AI companion free trials: what to check before adding a card

A free tier, a timed trial and a first-purchase discount are different things. Some allow limited messages indefinitely, some temporarily unlock a paid plan, and others automatically become paid at the end of a trial. The most important comparison is the exact moment a payment commitment begins.

Before starting a trial

1. Capture the checkout price, currency and renewal time.
2. Confirm whether a payment method is required.
3. Use a fictional test character and record which advertised feature is actually available.
4. Find the cancellation route in web billing or the app store.
5. Set your own calendar reminder before the conversion date.
6. After cancellation, check confirmation and do not assume the account was deleted.

Example: a “free” month with a hidden commitment

Imagine a trial that activates paid features for seven days and converts to a $20 recurring charge afterward. If you forget to cancel, the effective first month is not zero even though the entry screen says “trial.” The right record is the actual first billing date, post-trial rate, payment channel and cancellation procedure. By contrast, a persistent free tier with strict message caps may never charge but cannot demonstrate the performance of a paid tier.

Separate feature availability from allowance

During the trial, note whether an action is entirely unavailable, available but capped, or available only with purchasable credits. These are distinct limitations. A single free generated photo tells you little about the ongoing cost of a media-rich companion. Record the exact feature that persuaded you to upgrade and whether it remains available at the stated renewal rate.
