Can you move an AI companion to another app?
A realistic migration checklist: what you can copy, what may be lost, and how to protect privacy.
Independent research ✧ Source-linked feature claims ✧ No fabricated hands-on tests
Changing companion apps is not like moving a photo library. The character’s name and backstory may be portable, but hidden memories, model behavior, voice generation and relationship history may be proprietary. A copied prompt is not the same as importing the original companion.
What usually travels
- A manually written character profile, tone guidelines and fictional setting.
- Your own saved prompts and summaries where the app permits export.
- Important relationship or story milestones rewritten as concise, deliberate notes.
- Appearance descriptions, if you have rights to them and the new platform supports them.
What may not travel
Internal memory representations, embeddings, learned preferences that are not exposed to the user, the original model’s style, purchased credits and platform-specific voice assets generally cannot be assumed to migrate. Check export rights, service terms and the target app’s upload rules.
A safer three-stage migration
- Request or download your data using the original provider’s available export controls.
- Create a private, fictional-character summary. Remove identifying details about you and third parties that the new service does not need.
- Use the new service’s backstory and memory tools to recreate only the essential information, then test the result for consistency.
Nomi’s official help explicitly says there is no direct transfer of an AI from another platform, but describes recreating identity and shared history from user-prepared notes. That is an instructive model for setting realistic expectations.
